How Do I Respond to Reviews?

We recommend responding to every review you receive, whether positive, negative, or neutral! A well-considered, professional response shows prospective clients that you care about your couples before, during, and after the big day, and that you truly value their perspectives!

Additionally, potential clients value seeing how wedding pros handle both praise and criticism. It is just as important for potential clients to see how you can handle a situation where things didn’t work out as expected.

Things to Consider Before Replying

  • Acknowledge what may have gone wrong and include an apology. Even if the first thoughts you have after reading the review are, “I have no idea what they are talking about,” including an apology in your response is how you start turning this into a brand-building moment. Because even if you don’t think you did anything wrong, you made this particular client feel poorly about their experience, and that warrants an apology. Use this moment to correct your misstep by making them feel seen and heard.
  • Reviews are personal experiences. Please remember reviews may inevitably contain varying personal opinions and experiences that may or may not be mutually shared by everyone involved. Reviews may also contain statements where individual perspectives, discrepancies, and recollections differ. This means the way you perceive a situation may not be the way your client perceived it. These differing perspectives or disagreements does not make their review any less valid or “false”.
  • Take a beat. How you respond to feedback matters, even if your storefront has nothing but glowing five-star reviews. If you do receive a bad review, give yourself some time to reflect before responding. You may also consider asking someone else to review your response to make sure it doesn’t come off defensive or combative.
  • Remain respectful and professional. Review responses give you an opportunity to showcase your professionalism and empathy. Thank the reviewer for sharing their feedback, even if you disagree with their statements, experiences, and opinions, or if your view of the situation differs.
  • Put yourself in the shoes of a prospective client. Consider what thoughts and questions future prospective clients might have after reading the review and try to address them in your response to the reviewer.
  • Look out for learning opportunities. We learn from difficult experiences as well as from the good ones, so be open to insights that may help you grow and evolve your business.
  • Be smart! Reviewers can edit/update their reviews, and this happens more frequently than you might expect, so a positive, respectful attitude can go a long way.
